The two initially connected during a workout in Southern California in early spring when Rodgers was still exploring his options. They met again in Malibu, joined by several teammates, between the end of minicamp and the start of training camp. Building the necessary chemistry for success, however, is not an exact science. Metcalf admitted it can be “tough in the beginning,” and Rodgers is not interested in forcing it. That said, spending time together in close quarters for a couple of weeks could help speed up the process, which is one of the many reasons the Steelers continue to hold camp away from their facilities.

Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is making it a point to give Rodgers the spotlight during meetings, encouraging him to share whatever insights he may have. Rodgers, who emphasizes the importance of finding the “right messaging” during camp, has found a receptive learner in rookie quarterback Will Howard. “I want to be a support system for him and share anything I can,” Rodgers said. “I don’t want to overstep my bounds, but if he wants to learn anything or pick my brain, I’m all for it.”

While Rodgers believes Howard has the potential to be a “long-term guy” in the NFL, Rodgers himself is the short-term solution for Pittsburgh, which has aggressively revamped part of its roster in hopes of snapping a nearly decade-long playoff victory drought. Rodgers sees the Steelers as one of the 10 to 12 teams “on paper” with a real chance to compete for a championship. He has been on many teams that fit that profile in the past, but only one — the Green Bay squad that defeated the Steelers in the Super Bowl nearly 15 years ago — actually reached the pinnacle.
